# Broker account setup

> How Prescience creates your brokerage account, who signs in, and how test and live keys work.

A brokerage is a partner account, set up the same way as any other partner. It
uses the same API keys, the same partner portal and the same test and live
environments. There is no self-serve signup.

## Account setup

<Steps>
  <Step title="Prescience creates the partner">
    Prescience creates your brokerage in Internal as a partner of kind `broker`.
    The kind decides which endpoints your keys can call (see
    [What a broker key can call](#what-a-broker-key-can-call)). Prescience also sets
    who runs benefits administration: `prescience` (the default) or `partner`. With
    `partner`, you send final elections and run payroll deductions yourself; see
    [Partner-run enrollment](/guides/partner-enrollment).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your admins are invited">
    Prescience invites your admins by email. Each invitation contains the login
    URL, your email and a temporary password.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in to the partner portal">
    Sign in at [internal.getprescience.com/admin/login](https://internal.getprescience.com/admin/login)
    (`partners.getprescience.com/brokers` redirects there) and choose a new
    password. The portal is scoped to your brokerage: it shows
    your groups, never Prescience's internal screens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Mint a test key">
    In the portal, create a test key (`psk_test_...`). You mint test keys
    yourself. Store it in your secrets manager; see [Authentication](/authentication)
    for key formats and safety.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Go live">
    Under **Go live** in the portal, request production access. Prescience records
    compliance approval and turns live mode on, and then you can mint a live key
    (`psk_live_...`). Until then, live-key requests return `403 live_mode_disabled`.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The partner portal

| Tab | What it shows |
| - | - |
| Groups | Your groups with status and pricing progress. A group's page shows its mode, base plan and plans sent, both Diamond versions with their price, price components and modeled worst year, the comparison with the benchmark, and Time Machine provenance. |
| Playground | Run a quote with your test key from a JSON request body, or from a census CSV and an optional plans CSV. It returns what the API returns. Templates are provided. |
| Activity | Your recent API and MCP calls. |
| Webhooks | Your webhook endpoint and its deliveries. |
| Team | Your portal users. |
| Fit guidelines | The [fit guidelines](/guides/fit-guidelines) as Markdown to copy or download. |
| Connect your agent | The MCP URL, how to use your key, and the agent README. |

## Test and live

Test keys see only test groups and live keys only live groups. The environment
comes from the key; the base URL and endpoints are the same. In test mode no
emails go to members. See [Environments](/test-mode).

## What a broker key can call

Access depends on the partner's kind and on the key's scope. A request outside
what the key may call returns `403 forbidden`, with the message "This endpoint
isn't enabled for your partner type." or, when the partner type allows it but
the key's scope doesn't, "This endpoint isn't enabled for this API key."

| Capability | Endpoints |
| - | - |
| Quoting (brokers) | `POST /quotes`, `POST /price-on-plan`, the [MCP server](/guides/mcp) |
| Elections (brokers) | `POST /groups/{groupId}/elections` |
| Shared | `GET /ping`, `GET /plans`, groups, census, group quotes, `/webhook`, `/events` |

Broker keys cannot call the HR-platform endpoints (embed sessions, payroll
results, banking, onboarding, account, members, benefits summary, documents and
enrollments). Prescience can mint narrower keys when you want one: a
`quote_only` key can quote and read, and an `elections_only` key can submit
elections.
